The announcement yesterday by the PM John Key of an additional $30 million for tourism marketing for the next 12 months budget has quickly attracted a lot of welcome comments from around the industry. $5 million of this will be allocated for joint funding campaigns with RTO’s so good to see the regions will directly benefit also.
Certainly having the PM as the Minister of Tourism is now kicking in with some great benefits for our industry, and with 1 in 10 New Zealanders employed in the tourism industry, it’s well deserved recognition.
So the challenge now will be turning this extra funding into additional returns that will filter throughout the industry in the form of increased visitors and increased visitor spending – and not just for the Rugby World Cup period but beyond that. Making inroads into some of our newer markets being focused on (like China) will be important way to develop sustainable visitor numbers.
We’re looking forward to seeing the new and exciting marketing initiatives that will no doubt come out of this boosted funding budget for Tourism New Zealand.
