Following on from the first part in this series of posts, I am turning my attention to the accommodation sector. In particular to Beechtree Motel in Taupo.

Beechtree Motel, Taupo

I first met Jacqui Goold when delivering a workshop on social media at the NZ eTourism Conference last year. In a session where many people had interesting experiences and tales to share, Jacqui’s was the one that truly blew me away. Jacqui had a similar problem that I have come across with many accommodation operators, what do you write on social media to keep people engaged?

To resolve this problem Jacqui turned to a bear. A bear I hear you say. Yes a bear.

If you’ve not met Beachtree Bear before you’re probably visualising the same as I did – a 30-40cm teddy bear.

Think again. Beachtree Bear is around 5ft tall and leads a very exciting life, even by human standards, let alone for a stuffed companion.

Jacqui has successfully used Beachtree Bear to create a strong Facebook presence for her motel. As well as helping out around the motel with odd jobs like cutting the lawn and helping guests with their bags, our social media star also gets out and about in Taupo. Some of his adventures include Jet-Boating, cycling and even SkyDiving.

In return for her hard work, Jacqui now has an audience of over 300 following Beachtree Bear’s Facebook Page and an equal number as a friend – a great success story for a small motel in Taupo, I’m sure you’ll agree.

ike many of us, it looks like a busy season has seen Beachtree Bear too busy to get out and about recently. Although I’m sure he’ll soon be back into the swing of things.

Well done Jacqui for showing us all how you can create engaging content with a little bit of creativity.

  1. Hi ,Yes we have met Beechtree bear personally He is just so lovely and cuddly too.He does lead a very busy life.
I totally agree with what you have written about Jacquie. She is truely is the most helpful friendly and accomadating lovely lady we have met.Her husband Barry is also. Nothing is a problem for them. They go out of thier way to help with suggesting things to see and do in Taupo. I wish we could go up there more often.Just love them and Taupo.

  2. Hi James,
Great to see these success stories and celebrate people being innovative. Awesome job Jacqui and the beechtree bear.

  3. How creative! So often businesses use Social Media to advertise – trying to sell their rooms or tours – forgetting that social media is for being fun and entertaining and sharing the personality of your company. Congrats to Beechtree Motel for a clever campaign
